Incessant rain over the past five days in Ernakulam has damaged 123 houses in the district. Of them, 120 were damaged extensively, and another three houses were completely damaged. The district administration has opened 360 relief camps to shift people to safety.
An official communication from the district administration said that the India Meteorological department (IMD) had predicted isolated very heavy rain in Kerala till May 30. The weather warning also predicted heavy winds over Kerala during the next five days. A red alert has been declared for the district on May 30 and yellow alert on May 31.

According to IMD data, Ernakulam has received 366.8 mm of rain between March 1 and May 28, an excess of 39%. The neighbouring Kottayam, Alappuzha and Idukki districts have also received excess rain to the level of 91%, 28% and 52% respectively during the period.
In coastal Chellanam, dozens of houses have been damaged, mostly in the Cheriyakadavu area in the northern side of the panchayat.
